At an antiques fair today I found three "narrow" wooden planes on one stall that was otherwise selling plates and pots.

They were 3/4", 1", and 1 1/2" respectively, and very battered. They were labelled £6, £7, and £8.

I decided not to buy them, but now I'm at home and thinking about it I'm regretting it a little. There were a couple of tool specialists there, and I kind of assumed that if they really were worth it they would have gone already.

What do you think?

Wooden planes seem to me to be grossly undervalued in relation to their appeal and the pleasure of using them. If you want to get hold of some, you will get plenty of second chances. Maybe not as cheap as this haul but two or three pounds each, even from dealers.

I've found good ones on ebay - watch out for bulk lots with no bids. The most generally useful are the plain rebate planes and the hollows and rounds, unless you want moulding planes to make yards of picture rail or your own window frames.

Although the supply seems plentiful at present, it's not going to get any bigger. You're not going to make a fortune investing in them, but for the price of a sandwich, just buy a few and have a go!

Dave

You did the right thing to walk away.

Buying planes from a plate specialist?! And neither of you appear to know the first thing about them.

How large was the mouth?
What condition was the wood? Twisted, worn, dry, rotted ....?
What condition was the blade?

Run, don't walk!

Regards from Perth

It sounds like I did the right thing.

I'm not sure I would have used them (that was the first thing I said to SWMBO when we saw them). And I don't know enough about them (or Planes as a whole).

I have three large tool boxes full of 'antique' tools I inherited from SWMBO's grandad, and I need to spend some time going through them and sorting the wheat from the chaff before I get more tools I think.

If these were rebate planes - I got three similar sizes from a car boot last year - 25p each

I bought them for the irons but when I got them home decided to revive them.

If you have a big box of inherited toosl - be careful of the "chaff" once you learn more sometimes this takes on a new light.
