Dado depth

Hi guys, i have been working away for a few weeks and now i am back and have a few days off i am going to make my gate.

Just to remind you the gate is a brace and ledge and frame, with T&G cladding for the panel.
The stiles will be 4x2"
The top rail 4x2"
The mid rail 4x1"
and the bottom rail 8x1"
The panel will be grooved into the stiles and top rail, and will rest on the mid and bottom rails.

But i am unsure on how deep the groove in the stiles to hold the T&G cladding needs to be, i have had a look on google and i cant really find the answer. Some places say 1/4" deep and others say up to 1/2" deep.

What depth would you guys advise to cut?

I think i would go with 1/2" ,gives a bit more room to play with.

The only issue I see is the possible weakness of the two edges with a dado in the lower rail which is only 1" wide.
