Hi,
This is going to sound like a daft question. Im used to buying regular pine from timber yard by the meter. Just wondering if anyone can put it into simple terms for me when buying hardwood.

Just for an example if i bought 1 cuft of oak at 1" thickness and 12" wide this would equate to 1 length of oak at 3.6576m long?

Am i along the right lines?

I know it's probably a stupid question but im just trying to work out the costs of hardwood vs buying softwood.

Cheers

Yes you are correct, 3.6576m or 12'

I find it easier to convert everything to metric and work in m3 whether it be soft or hardwood.

Yep. For anyone scratching their heads....

1 cubic foot = 12" x 12" x 12"= 1728 cubic inches

Divide by the thickness and width of the board in question (effectively the area of the end of the board):

1728 / (1" x 12") = 144" board length

In cm:

144" * 2.54 = 365.76cm

E.g. 1 cubic foot of 2x4 would be approx 1728 / (2x4) = 216" long (5.48m)
