Hi and thanks for reading.

OK, new clothes for this thread...
after trying several dealers i found that none of them will ship a scheppach basato bandsaw to Portugal. In fact, the only one that responded positively was axminster (their hobby BS :http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-hobby-series-awhbs250n-bandsaw-prod886302/ is a possibility, as is the bigger 350 - but at a significantly higher cost)

So, any advice on this one? should i try to find a Scheppach (or any other small-ish bandsaw? record? dewalt? metabo? ...) on another place or settle for Axi? i ask this because i read some negative reviews on the table adjustment of the Axi saws. But, then again, at this price range maybe it´s more of a "feature"?

So, basically, the 10" Axi hobby saw would be a good investment or should i go for another maker? i guess that at the low end of the spectrum all the BS should be made in China, but maker reputation and quality control should also make a difference, no?

Anyway, thanks in advance.
Any help appreciated,
Miguel.

there's a scheppach distributor in Portugal:www.costagarcia.pt, at least it was some years ago.
could be worth a call.
alternatively you can try www.poolewood.co.uk, last time i've looked they had scheppach stuff
in their catalgogue and they would ship abroad. their site looks a little awkward but i've used them twice
and had no problems.
I can't really help you re quality, IMHO, 10" bandsaws are too flimsy for any real work, but I reckon they
can be used with some extra care.

Obrigado, um compatriota!

i tried with costagarcia, but haven´t got a reply yet (it´s been a week since i emailed them). I´ll try poolewood, thanks for the link.

yes, 10" should still be a bit flimsy, i considered a 14" thing (and still do if they´d ship it here and it wouldn´t cost the moon :) ) but i guess that the only real need i´d have for it would be resawing guitar backs and sides, and i doub´t it would be accurate/powerful enough for that.

most of the times i use a bandsaw for rough sttuff and clean (if needed) with hand-palnes afterwards.

What bandsaw do you have, if i may so ask?

Thanks,
Miguel.

(e um abraço!)

ok, back at this again... I´m almost set on axi´s Hobby Series AWHBS250N saw. It might not be the bee´s knees but shipping is not prohibitive, it´s made from steel and cast iron, has 10" wheels and i have axminster customer service to back me up in case anything goes south. I would prefer something a bit more powerful, but i´m guess the world won´t come to an end because of that.

Anyway, my question is - to someone with experience with this saw - should i buy an upgrade rip fence (like this cheap one: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-sm ... rod480331/) or keep the one the saw comes with. any other upgrade tips?

thanks in advance,
Miguel.

The link to the rip fence seems to be the one that came with the axminster bandsaw I bought a year ago. It seems fine but a bit lightweight compared to the fences on a larger machine. As a saw it will cut up to 12cm hardwood (slowly) providing a good blade is used - I use it mainly for bowl blanks and similar. Will also happily cut thin sections for trimming etc. For hobby use it does all of what I need although I suspect a larger capacity will be needed if I get more ambitious in future.

Rgds
