Variable Speed Floor standing Pillar Drills

I had my eye on the SIP F32-20 Floor Pillar Drill. What attracted me to it is the massive table, which I think will be really useful. Unfortunately, it doesn't have variable speed though :( (relies on changing pulleys). I've always told myself that my next drill must have variable speed as...

Metal pipe with very thick walls?

I'm trying to find something quite specific! In need ome metal tubing/piping that has an ID of 19mm (can be slightly bigger but no smaller) and then some very thick walls of at least 5mm so they can be threaded. I've been to my local supplier and looked online, but can't find anything suitable...

    Glue block

Lets say you're wanting to create a natural edge bowl and you have a blank like below where you don't have quite enough material for a tenon. If it was dry, you could use a glue block. But in the case where it's green, what are your options? I was looking at the PU glues, and they seem to work...

    Lathe stand adjustable feet?

I'm going to be building some new legs for my lathe. The ones I have currently are made from 4x4" posts and although are really sturdy, they're relatively light, so I get a lot of vibration with bigger unbalanced pieces. I'm a sit down turner, and my legs go under the lathe, so it's important...

    Mini indoor "kiln"

I've recieved a lot of green Oak beams offcuts (some 4x4" and some 5x5"). Some of it has some knarly cracks, and some of it is currently crack free. My plan to make the most of it, is to rough turn it into box/vase/hollowform blanks before it cracks any more. I'm wondering what would be the...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

I had a question regarding the Tormek T4. If you were to sharpen a plane blade on it : 220 primary bevel 1000 secondary bevel And then honed using the leather wheel and honing compound (8000) Do you think that produces an edge comparable to 8000 grit water stones? I.e could it replace your...

Anyone do any fluting/shaping with a router?

Does anyone do any shaping with a router on the lathe? I've seen jigs like the one below which use a fence that the router sled follows to cut straight flutes at a fixed depth. I've also seen jigs that instead of a fence to follow, use a depth stop around the cutter to only allow the cutter to...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

First off, I'm not going to attempt this cut. I wouldn't dream of it. Quite happy to use a jig saw. ...but I want to understand how the piece is not simply flung back? I appreciate that most kick back is caused by the work piece being trapped between the fence and the blade, causing the piece...

Brad point bits with accurate tip

I have several sets of Brad Point bits, some expensive, some mid range. But a problem I find with a lot of them is that the tip is not always very central or runs true. I can put the bit in the drill press or on the lathe, and the whole thing runs true except for the point on the end. Which is...

    Ray Keys style smock?

Does anyone know where I can find the type of smock that Ray keys used to wear? I know you can get the Tabard/Apron type thing (lots on ebay), but they don't have the elasticated neck or wrap around the waist.

    Sorby Pro Edge Coarse Belts

I have a few tools where I want to completely regrind the profile, removing lots of material. For example turning an old Skew into a round nose negative rake scraper. In the past I just used the Ceramic 60grit belt, but it takes forever! ... so I did a little searching to see if I could find an...

Holding the lids of boxes for working

I like to make small boxes like the one shown in Figure A. Note, the finial is inserted afterwards, so can be ignored for this discussion. But the the problem I always have, and haven't found a good solution for, is holding the lid so I can do a continuous cut and finish of one entire surface...

How would you have marked this out?

I am currently making some japanese inspired shelves. There are 5 shelves and then a top and bottom piece. Each side has two rails, where each shelf has two long tenons that go through the rails. I started this project out by first creating the side rails. I milled the timber to size and...

    Thien Baffle for Camvac?

Has anyone had any luck making a Thien Baffle type system for a Cam Vac (Twin Motor)? I've been experimenting with something like this : With only one motor enabled, it kind of works, but I want the extra power of two motors as I want to use it with my thicknesser. With two motors enabled, I...

    Makita LS1019

This saw is advertised as being 805mm in depth from the wall. Anyone know if that's with the blade brought forward, or if that measurement is with it in its most compact state (at 90degree like in the picture) ...because 805mm sounds really quite large for a 10inch saw without the traditional...

    Leather stropping wheel

You see a lot of wood carvers that use a leather (or MDF) stropping wheel attached to a what looks a like a bog standard bench grinder, and they seem to get excellent results. Just wondering. Why isn't this more common with woodworking chisels? Given the speed at which the wheel is spinning...

    Adirondack plans (sketchup)

I don't suppose anyone has sketchup plans for an Adirondack chair do they? I've come across Norms plans as a PDF which is great, but it would be even nicer to be able to print out full scale templates :D

    Hand cut bridle joints

Anyone got any tips on getting the "mortise" part of the bridle joint cleaned up (hands tools only)? My cuts with the saw are getting pretty good now, and I am cutting to within 0.5mm from my knife line and cleaning up with a chisel. I find it diffcult get the inside of the "mortice" flat...

    Wax Finish Fail

Very disappointed with how this came out. The microcrystalline in the grain has turned white ☹☹ I could definitely have done a better job in the corners with removing the excess. At the time though, it was clear, so couldn't see it. But not sure about the wax in the grain.

    Wax after oil

I like to make small keepsake boxes. I mostly finish them with Liberon Finishing Oil, but also plan to try hard wax oil. After applying the oil, what type of wax do you tend to apply to give a more softer feel? I am looking for a Matt/Satin finish. Not glossy Also, will the wax actually adhere...
