Cheers Chrispy, just waiting for Wizard to chirp up with his usual words of wisdom :D

    Finishing an oak toilet seat?

Guys, look, no p*ss taking ok. [-X I have a solid oak loo seat that needs refinishing. The original seat was a very smooth finish (no, not through sitting on it  ) and I'm not sure how it was finished. Anyway, I've sanded it all back to bare wood and want a similar finish, which I don't...

    Triton Routers

I have a cheapo 1/2" router (B&Q jobbie), which I'm not too impressed with, which is fitted to a 10mm thick phenolic plate in my router table. I like the fixed base adjustment feature and the micro adjuster as it means I could dispense with my home made router lift. Will it rise through the...

    Exterior Door Advice please

Ha d an idea today. I can simply put a palnt on the inside of the door frame to allow me to use a thicker door, say 56mm. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before. Anyway, this sorts my issues out, in that I can make a standard construction door with 25 wide brace and mi-rail and...

    Profitable products

I bought mine a memory stick last year. She hasn't forgotten to make my tea, put beers in the fridge or have sex regularly since I started beating her with it!

    Two little boys.

Bloke walks into a pub and asks for a pint of anything except Stella. Barman asks, "What's wrong with Stella?" Bloke says, "I had 12 pints of Stella last night and when I came round I was chuffing skint." Barman says, "12 pints of anything costs about the same." Bloke replies, "Skint's my dog."...

    Exterior Door Advice please

The picture above the ones I included is associated with a double margin door. The metal reinforcing strip, as I understand it, is normal practice for such a door type, strengthening the joint between the two door leaves. The book is part of a series of books which are considered authorative...

    Polishing aluminium?

I fully agree with Matt. Bolt through middle, tightened by a nut on other end, into a drill chuck, spin it up and then first, if necessary, 1200/1500 grade wet & dry (used wet) will bring them up to quite a good shine. Then Autosol on a rag to get that chromed look.

    Wood / Tree stump identification

I agree, only low down on the main stem does it go gnarly. I have a woodbarn stuffed with about 10tonnes of ash exactly like that in the picture. And yep, settle it by splitting a bit. :)

    Exterior Door Advice please

Jacob, I tend to agree with your comments regarding the wide stiles/ deep bottom rail & through M&T's, which is why I went down the beefed up route because I couldn't see another way of stiffening the door, given it must remain 45 thick. I'm not trying to fake anything at all, I merely don't...

Green belt land and planning permission

Green belt land and planning permission

DTR, you hit the nail right on the head. Cameron really did his bit to destroy decades of considered and damned good planning regulation, by the introduction of the NPPF, which set Local Authorities an impossible job of ensuring they provide a five year supply of housing land, land which is...

    Wood / Tree stump identification

It could be beech, but it may well be ash. Personally I think the bark markings resemble that of ash. If you can still look at any of the smaller branches/twigs on the felled tree, if it's ash you will see very black velvety buds at the tips of rather thick twigs, and the buds will be paw-like...
