Carving chisels - what does it all mean?!

Maybe a good idea to buy one of Chris Pye's books, or at least visit his web site (http://chrispye-woodcarving.com/). Pam

FWW's Chisel Bench Chisel Head to Head

How about all of the above? :) Seriously, I don't exactly find their chisel reviews objectionable, more like I disdain them based on their previous big chisel review 4 or 5 years ago. They touted a Japanese brand that was OK, but certainly not top notch, same with the western chisels they...

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in FWW reviews. Pam

    Toothed blades for bevel-down planes

Well, maybe it's a new trick in the UK, but several of us have been doing this for 6 or 7 years, at least. It was greatly facilitated by the toothed blade for the LN LAJ. Pam

    Toothed blades for bevel-down planes

I'd think it much easier and cheaper to pick up an old woodie with toothing blade, especially in the UK. That's what I did 7 or 8 years ago. I also bought a toothing blade for the LN LAJ, which also works very nicely. The burr swiping trick isn't new at all. Pam

    Tage Frid & Dovetails

Yes, same source, same method. As Derek says, splitting is often a problem so you may want to clamp the piece and/or take a preliminary chop at the base of the dovetail. Pam

A couple of new shooting boards

Oh, what lovelies, Derek, got to get hold of some of that jarrah one of these years. Pam

Actually how useful do you find a bevel up bench plane?

I bought the LN LA Jack when I couldn't get any of that old Stanley junk to work; so I found it very useful, particularly since it was the first metal bench plane that worked for me. Very shortly after I was seduced by wooden planes, Japanese in particular, and now use metal specialty planes...

    Japanese saws

So Rob tells me; but I'd moved on to the hand mades a couple of months before LV released it. The one I used a lot to very good effect is the Professional Dozuki at http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx ... at=1,42884 Pam

    Japanese saws

I had the opportunity to use the LN straight handled saw at a woodworking seminar (I normally use Japanese saws, but only hand made at this point). It was super, as fast and accurate as my dozuki, very impressive. LV also has some quality machine made dozuki, such as the Professional that I...

    Some hand planed moldings (wip)

Everyone ought to take a Fluid Dynamics 101 course before using a bathroom, much less designing one. :) Except for the abysmal looks of one, I'd much prefer one like those seen in movies, mental hospital shower rooms where you simply hose it down and walk away. But then I hate doing repetitive...

    Some hand planed moldings (wip)

Aha, as I thought, you aren't the one who dusts/cleans the house. :) The guys who design appliances persist in designing dust catchers, in spite of the fact they've been told for 20 or 30 years that their designs are hard to keep clean. Pam

    Some hand planed moldings (wip)

Great job, unbelievable. One question though, why is the top of the molding revealed in that one short section? Is it intended as a little shelf? Pam

    Dutch planes in Great Britain

In the great Nooitgedagt sell off three or so years ago I bought a Nooitgedagt rebate. I suspect these hit the UK, too. Pam

    Plane Advice

What Mike said, plus the advantage of buying the LN is that as you become more expert and start replacing its functions with specific planes, the LN gets almost the entire purchase price back on ebay. Not sure about the resale value of LV, but it's probably not all that bad. Pam

    Plane Advice

I always recommend the LN or LV low angle jacks for a first plane. They pretty much work out of the box, are very flexible (they do lots of planing jobs), and do these planing jobs quite nicely. Pam

    Japanese plane blades from Dick

Don't know about the Dick blades, but real Japanese irons in real Japanese dai work real good; however, don't count on getting by on looks alone, it's very tricky getting to a real Japanese plane. Pam

    Skewing and Slicing

Of course it does, simple geometry. For a given blade width, a skewed blade's edge is the hypotenuse, which is longer than either edge. Pam

    Chamfer plane

My favorite is an old Preston chamfering spokeshave (just saw one on ebay a day or so ago), works great; but there are plenty of wooden (boxwood is good) chamfering planes, check with Tony Murland (what has happened to his website? has he gone out of business?) or Andy Stephens...
