    Extract tannins to make ink

Hi all, anyone had any luck or got a solution for extracting the tannins (colour) from sawdust or shavings to make ink (or for painting). I know walnut shells are used by boiling in water then boiling off the water to leave the pigment I’ve saved different coloured sawdusts (scroll saw so...

    Sawdust crystallisation

It’s a bit of a bad pic, I’ll need to hunt out my macro lens but here’s an example of the crystals forming. They don’t tend to form on the surface. Only when you cut a section out or do an inside cut like on the scroll saw. Also, much stronger scent from it when it’s forming crystals.

    Sawdust crystallisation

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has had this happen with their sawdust? It’s only seems to happen to my lignum vitae sawdust, both fine dust from the scroll saw and thicker shavings from forstner bits & can happen within hours of leaving the wood. I save all my lignin vitae sawdust &...

    Got a squeaking problem

Hey :) After a full day trying to figure out where it’s coming from It’s making less noise but still every now and then it squeaks. I bought some spray from B&Q which says it sprays as a liquid but solidifies and lubricates for a long time. I’ve sprayed a few places where I thought the...

    Got a squeaking problem

Okay it’s not the motor. It’s running quiet the noise only comes when I put tension on the tensioning knob. I tried to take a video but the noise didn’t happen when I tried to replicate the issue. clearly it knows when it’s being filmed. Bloody sentient saws

    Got a squeaking problem

Hey all thanks for the replies. I’ve got it out to have a look at. It seems the noise only happens when I tension the tensioning knob at the back if I loosen it (obv can’t work like that)the noise goes away but clearly it needs tension to be able to cut properly. I understand that. so the...

    Got a squeaking problem

Oh also it literally just started today gradually from a quiet noise to quite loud. Obviously gets much faster when I run the speed faster.

    Got a squeaking problem

Does anyone know why it’s making this noise? I know it’s dusty, I’ll be hoovering it tomorrow & giving it a good clean. I’ll also check in the motor bay to see if maybe it’s there. Also, I only have WD40, I’m assuming I can’t use that on anything on this machine. Only that thick goop grease? ive...

    Static electricity

Hi all, ive been testing it out & meant to reply earlier than today. As seen in the video I wasn't using the tailstock since I figured the ring mandrel would be secure enough to hold the wood ring. I know there was a wobble too, it wasn't running fully true. Ive since used the tailstock & no...

    Static electricity

Ah yeah I’ve got a tailstock. I didn’t think it’d be needed if it’s an expanding ring mandrel & clamped into the Chuck. I’ll give it a try later in the morning & see if that makes a difference. How would I add an earth to the lathe though? Safely I might add.

    Static electricity

Hey all, I recently got a Proxxon DB 250 lathe for Xmas & the 3 Jaw Chuck that goes with it. I’ve had a little play around with it with no problems though my expanding ring mandrel arrived and when I loaded it up in the Chuck it started making electrical arcs between the mandrel & the tool...

    Essential Oils help

Well, extract the scent from the wood. similar to putting pine needles in a still to extract the pine scent.

    Essential Oils help

Not entirely sure which section to put this post in as its scroll saw related but not directly. I've been saving the fine sawdust from different woods (separately so its as pure as I can get it) and have many different types, sandalwood, oak, maple, Palo Santo & many more but I wondered if...

    Sawdust Art

I think i'd need a still to extract the oils from the wood or sawdust but then I run into the problem of owning a still without a licence in the UK. I wouldn't be using it for making booze but I think one still needs a licence to own a distilling machine or apparatus :( I've been looking up the...

    Sawdust Art

It could be moved to 'General woodworking' if you want. I posted it in scroll saw because the sawdust Im using is very very fine sawdust which is made with the scroll saw. It's scroll saw related so it was posted here :)

    Sawdust Art

@novocaine: I wasn't going off on one. Your reply seemed a little odd. For example a dustman to me is another term for the guys that collect the bins. lets be honest though your reply did have an atmosphere of taking the mick. "only if you are part of the inner circle", a "dustmans press"...

    Sawdust Art

@ bodgerbaz: Heh? @ novocaine: -_- @ ChrisR & Claymore: My wood is rarely damaged and when it is i'll go to the doctor, not rub glue/sawdust on it 0.0 @ Bm101: Thanks, i'll give it a go. Etsy however seems like a cash sinkhole. Constant re-listing of items with hardly any orders. I get more...

    Sawdust Art

Hi all, Im not sure if anyone else does this but I keep some of the sawdust from my projects. Especially the nice smelling ones or exotic woods. A list of the sawdust I keep are Black walnut Douglas fir Oak Panga Panga Sapele / Utile Mahogany African Sandalwood (or Camwood) and of course...

Sawdust candles / airfreshener advice needed

Lol, Okay I'll try some of those ideas. I've seen the tin one before though I wasn't really wanting to burn the sawdust, rather infuse it's smell in the house/car somehow. Also, how did you know my closest fire station is Barrhead Peter?

Sawdust candles / airfreshener advice needed

Okay after searching everywhere and only finding essentially a 'fire starter' instructions I thought I'd ask on here as I know everyone is so helpful :) Quite recently I bought a pillar drill so I've been making sawdust of a bigger kind compared to the scroll saw so I've been saving it as its...
