    Help with first ever project

Once you have a template you can probably just stick it to the wood you want to cut with double sided tape ( I use carpet tape), then use a bearing guided bit in your router to follow the template. I posted on making a simple circle cutting base for my router on my blog, which I think will...

    Metal detector

I have the Little Wizard (mini version of the Lumber Wizard, which seems to be well thought of but is about £90). Rutlands sell the Little Wizard for the same price as the one in your link. The only gotcha is that it's got a little wheel which you "tune" the sensitivity with, so you need to...

Why does my drill press make messy holes?

I couldn't see any when I did a quick scan of Axminster's forstner bits page, but there's an 8mm plug cutter and matching forstner bit in their 8-15mm plug cutting set, which is currently on special offer. Hope this helps John

    Bikes in the wood

That reminded me of the "You are going to die a splintery death...possibly on fire" quote in this thread :)

Looking for a suitable drill press - advice wanted

Or maybe I got lucky, or didn't have such high expectations of accuracy. They certainly look very similar, other than the handle and paint job... Of course if I'd not been happy with it I could have returned it to Axminster and got the more expensive ED16B (which seems to have been replaced by...

Looking for a suitable drill press - advice wanted

I have that radial drill myself. I bought it as I wanted the maximum flexibility from a "minimal" (for some value thereof :) ) number of small, cheap machines. As my planer-thicknesser could handle a max of 8" x 8" I decided my drill and bandsaw must each have a similar or better sized throat...

I used my band saw on its slow speed with a fine blade when I made my circle cutting router base. John

Thanks again Chris. It all arrived safely. Now to figure out how to use it! :) John

    Beginner router set

I think that's the current version of the set I have. It's not bad, but one of my most used bits now has a sizeable chip missing (hence me starting the rolling Wealden and Axcaliber replacement programme :)). My philosophy is to buy every conceivable tool in case I find I need it in the middle...

Help, Tension fitting on Scroll Saw broken

Is the problem that the long threaded bar has had its threads stripped, or that the knobs have come loose from it? If it's the former could you remove the knob and fixings and reverse the rod so a different part of it is where the thread is needed ( assuming the whole rod is threaded)...

    Hand Operated Pillar Drills

Thanks for the tip Andy, I already managed to get into it, which is how I know the springs are missing. I'll have a rummage around the house and try and find some suitable donor pens :) John

Mahogany wanted for classic boat restoration

John's boat works does restoration (amongst other things) on the Thames near Brentford. He may be able to point you at a local supplier.

    Beginner router set

+1 Ages ago I bought a set of about 20 bits from Axminster and in over 4 years I've only taken the rubbery covering off 4 of them! I've used (in order of frequency, most used first): Straight flush cut 3/8" straight 1/2" straight 1/4" Slot cutter The bits aren't the best quality and I have...

    Hand Operated Pillar Drills

I just picked one of these up at a car boot sale and I think it's the same as the one in your photo, so I'm incredibly glad to have found your explanation of how it works! I couldn't find any markings other than a "British Made" sticker on the crank, but am I to take it that it's made by M C...

    Thread gauges

I'm looking for some advice on which set(s) of thread gauges to buy. I like to buy old tools (and dream of one day buying old machinery!) and get them back to a usable state, but occasionally I find missing or broken screws, nuts, bolts etc, which I need to replace. As many of these tools will...

    Charnwood W730 Bandsaw Band Saw

Hi Krisdl, It's a 2 page review by Andy King, with quite a lot of photos and some good points. You get full online access to all back issues if you take out an online subscription to the magazine which you can get from www.getwoodworking.com. He mentions cutting some 8 inch oak with a little...

    Goodwoodworking pictures

Even in the short time I've been reading Good Woodworking it seems to have gone downhill and the only reason I got the last one was so I could have a hard copy of their review of my bandsaw. My electronic subscription to The Woodworker which I got when I needed to read a backissue with a...

    Charnwood W730 Bandsaw Band Saw

I've got a digital subscription to The Woodworker and it also appeared in there, but it doesn't seem to be in the print version. You can get both magazines bundled together for £3.75 though so it doesn't make a lot of odds :)

    Forum Users Bandsaws

Charnwood W730 Not the strongest or the most precision made bandsaw out there but a very high specification for the money (unbeatable IMHO) and better made than I was expecting when I bought it. With a bit of tweaking I've got it set up quite nicely and I've cut 8" thick beech with the supplied...

    Charnwood W730 Bandsaw Band Saw

Well, I'm not completely finished, as although I've got the blade square to the table in one dimension, it's still slightly off front to back, but it was good enough to do a test for you. I just put the biggest lump of wood I had, an offcut of Beech roughly 8" x 2" up on its edge (so...
