Demolishing a Chimney? Do I need any permission?

Yes as it alters the "road frontage". You'll also need to inform Building Control to ensure that the work meets the required standards.

    The great 'Double Glazing Con'

Try getting FAS not Vths. Good softwood is out there if you specify it and are willing to pay the extra. It does take a bit of sourcing but it is out there. I think it's more a scale of economy thing, the mill can shift much more Vths quality which most people find 'good enough' for a lot less...

    The great 'Double Glazing Con'

Asymmetric units are the best value for money option. You can get special acoustic laminated glass but it costs a fair bit more. Phone a local IGU manufacturer or one of the nationals and ask to speak to their tech dept. If they ask whether you are trade just say you are specifying for a job...

    The great 'Double Glazing Con'

It's not the DGUs that are the problem it's the way EPCs are scored that is the issue, that and the prices peddled by some national installers. Double glazing provides a greatly increased acoustic and thermal insulation values. A standard 4mm annealed glass sheet has a u value of u/5.8. the...

    Plane Socks?

What he said. My planes live in my tool box in old cotton sport socks that get a load of WD40 chucked in and out every 6 months or so. Never had any corrosion on my planes when kept like this even when they are left for a month or two. Oak framing doesn't have a great deal of use for planes, I...

    stair building advice

Never heard these two before, not in my copy of part K either. Landings should be no narrower than the width of the stairs though. Any staircase less than about 650mm feels too narrow though. Space saver stairs have different reg too. Just download Part K and make sure all the boxes are...

    Mobile Sawmills

I'm not too bothered if we don't have a lot of work for it as it will be used for resawing framing timbers from the spares pile and cutting curved brace slab from the tree surgeons we know. The workshop isn't big enough for a 4" blade resaw and running/installing a mill is probably cheaper...

    Mobile Sawmills

This year we are considering (getting once the cash is in the bank) expanding our workshop with a mobile sawmill for the resawing of oversize timbers, curve brace stock and even log conversion from the Arborists we share our yard with. The one thing I would really like to be able to know is...

    Tape measure accuracy

Tape measures have a Roman numeral printed near the hook. This is officially how accurate they are. All Stanley tapes are Class II stamped giving an accuracy of +/-2mm over an 8m tape. A Class I stamped tape would give +/-1mm over 8m.

Anyone bought tools from abroad ?

If you are VAT registered and provide the supplier with your VAT no. then you don't have to pay the VAT either inside the EU. I wish this worked within the UK too, just provide my suppliers with my VAT number, they check with the VAT office online, I don't have to pay the VAT on materials etc...

    Wooden Rulers

I use a birch Hultafors one every day, it's the 2m reversed version. I feel lost and confused if I mislay or leave it on the side at home before work.

Sawdust What do you do with yours?

We also heat the workshop with a sawdust burner, only problem is we end up with a lot of dust in the summer then never enough by the end of the winter. Typical!
