Setup hand plane for a novice

I'm very new to woodworking and bought a Stanley No 4 Smooth Plane 2 Inch to flatten some hardwood cherry boards I have. I was surprised and let down that the plane is unusable as new. Looks like I need to work on the blade with a couple of grits, some leather & green compound and a Honing...

    Danish Oil simpler application ?

Could anyone elaborate on this end grain comment? Why is this an issue?

    Danish Oil simpler application ?

Hi all, Newbie woodworker here ! Might be an odd question but when it comes to applying Danish Oil on a hardwood piece that's fairly small eg 20cm by 20cm, 1cm thick, instead of multiple applications of Danish Oil, why couldn't you just (or can you) pour the oil into a large flat container...

    Sharpening stones?

Just learning about and considering getting into hand planes, specifically for smoothing. Looking at youtube vids I would need some sharpening stones, one example I have seen is 250 course 600 fine 1200 superfine where's a good place online to buy these, at reasonable cost, as I say I'm just...

    Sanders?

I went for a Bosch PEX 300 AE Random Orbit Sander in the end. I'm not in the trade but a learning amateur.

Planer thicknesses smoothness as sandpaper grit level?

Hmm, the thought of learning planing appeals to me. The Stanley 80 scraper seems magical too. I fundamentally can't comprehend however how something the size of a plane could get a board flat when the board is maybe 8 times the width of the plane itself... off to youtube i go !

    Sanders?

So it seems around 240W is actually controllable by one hand? And in use, I just move with the grain, slooooowly ?

    Sanders?

Having some confusion in regards to sanding a hardwood. Initally used a Mouse style sander which is 55W but the swirling was horrible, so i grabbed a rotary sander this is a 430W and a beast to handle. Really poor control and it goes where it wants. Doing straight lines with the grain was...

    Wet wood to raise fibres?

I'm thinking Danish Oil for finishing

    Wet wood to raise fibres?

I have some machine planed wood that I am going to now use a mouse sander on to get truly smooth and flat (going through a sequence of grits). Can/Should I wet the wood first and leave it for a while to encourage fibres to raise? I'm new to woodworking and can recall reading that somewhere and...

Planer thicknesses smoothness as sandpaper grit level?

Wow I'm having my eyes opened here, thanks all for the help so far! For sanding, would this sequence of grit be ok? 80, 120 then 240?

Planer thicknesses smoothness as sandpaper grit level?

Looking now at the boards I was happy with, I can see the ripple effect. It seems more pronounced on boards that once I had got them to the required height I left the blade height the same and I passed the boards through a few more times to `clean` up the board (may not be a good idea?). So the...

    Blade safety gloves

Hmm, from the advice here and on other pages on this forum I've since found, it seems no gloves is the way to go. Better to lose a finger and have 9 remaining than have them all dragged into the spinning blade of destruction! thanks all

Planer thicknesses smoothness as sandpaper grit level?

To put it another way, I have some planed hardwood boards that have ripple in them, what level of grit sandpaper should I use to remove the ripple prior to finishing with Danish Oil?
