Any Woodturning courses in East Lothian or Edinburgh area

Thanks for the update Rob- glad to hear it was only a temporary issue and has since been sorted. I'm not really in a position to apply again at present but I might consider it again in the longer term.

Any Woodturning courses in East Lothian or Edinburgh area

There's a wood turning club in Musselburgh- Fisherrow wood working group, although their website says they've started a waiting list for membership due to high demand. I visited the Broxburn club several years ago and they seemed like a good bunch, but I had the same problem as Droogs with the...

    Western Red Ceda

Hi Mike, From the picture it looks like you have a species of pine there, not western red cedar. All the best, David

    Foreign 102 block plane

Thanks all for the responses- 25 seems to work fine. Interesting bit of history, although stamping Foreign in lieu of a brand name (rather than just leaving it blank) seems a bit superfluous. Cheers, DB

    Foreign 102 block plane

Apologies in advance if this prompts one of those sharpening "debates", but I was wondering if there's a consensus on the honing angle for this block plane I picked up on ebay- just the standard 30 degrees? It's a bevel-up affair with the iron bedded at ~25 degrees. It has "FOREIGN" cast on...

    one last job

I'm planning to build a casket-style case for my banjo, a bit like this one (the plans were online somewhere): But you probably wouldn't fit in that unless you're really small...

My next project, how difficult can it be

Wow, that would be really useful for that summer week we get around April.

    Travel Cocktail Cabinet

Thanks for that. Using a coping saw hadn't even occurred to me, although in my defense I don't even own one yet so I'd like to think I would have had the gumption to figure it out eventually! I imagine a concertina-d cake stand column would be fairly do-able, but as I'm not a fan of cake I'd...

    Travel Cocktail Cabinet

Hi Dave That's a great design. I particularly like the wee gothic windows. Can I ask how you cut them? Is there more than one piece of wood involved? I can't picture the most efficient way to do that. Or maybe you just cut them out with a jigsaw? Sorry, I'm a complete beginner and need to learn!

    Basic tools for beginners

Thanks all for the helpful advice. I think springing for some better quality tools is probably wise. If I only buy what i need for any given project it shouldn't feel too painful! I had been looking at the Paul Sellers workbench building videos on youtube thinking something along those lines...

    Basic tools for beginners

Hi. Can anyone advise a newbie on gathering some basic hand tools? I've no real experience but I've always wanted to have a go at woodworking and I'm keen to get started on some basic bits of furniture from the projects in DK's Woodwork manual. I'm in a flat so planning to stick with hand tools...
