. But I'd say the best advice I received was not to buy anything until I found I needed it. That's saved me a few quid.

Completely agree & the old adage buy cheap buy twice is generally true as well.

Most used tool in my shop is the planer thicknesser closely followed my bandsaw because I only buy sawn timber or use timber I’ve seasoned myself.
Hand tools would be my chalk line & tape measure.
