He makes hard work of that, layering in the horizontal on the lathe is a lot easier and the centres can just be cored out with a plunged parting tool and each section internals refined as you go.
A bigger version of this
If you have more than one chuck you can leave the item attached to a chuck and take the assembly off to glue up the next stage whilst doing other work such as preparing the next rings on the lathe.
Or like this They don't have to be segmented for decoration the sections can be solid to start with and the section joins camouflaged by surface colouring but the main thing is the coring is done in stages and can be done without any fancy deep hollowing tools.
