I’ve just been given two Ash logs that were cut down late last year for firewood. However, as I hope to start learning turning this year I thought they may be worth keeping? They’re already showing signs of splitting at one end though.

Should I just paint the ends and cover them or chainsaw them up in some fashion?

Thanks

Richard

Keep em. Outside under cover to not dry too quickly.
Won't know whether it was worth saving until we see what you made with them  but even if it's just firewood the exercise is still useful.

I t may depend on how long the logs are if very long then the split maybe only6 to 12 inches from the end.
As suggested split the one through where the split is you should get some small bowls or even some spindle blanks.
The one which has the fork in it split through both branches right down the middle you may get some nice wood depending how heavy the branches were.

Thanks, I’ve painted the ends now and will split them in the next few days.

Once I get my lathe I’ll have a play, they might end up in the wood burner anyway

Get the bark off ASAP or it, and the sapwood will be crawling with woodworm. DAMHIK!

Now that you have got the ends sealed you have slowed further deterioration.
The wood was free so it's ideal to practice with. If you end up with a turned piece it's an added bonus.
