I have previously posted about my new workshop - well over the weekend I sorted out the lighting. The overhead lighting is not fantastic to be honest - 12 x 50W spots and it is not bright enough - i may change that in due course. However, some of you will know that I do quite a lot of detailed inlay / carving work - and I have been looking for a very bright spotlight for ages. The idea came to be about getting a dental spotlight - and I have been looking for quite a while. There are new chinese ones for less than £300 but I started searching on a well-known auction site - and came across a guy in Birmingham who was selling job lots of old lights he had stripped out of dental practices. Oh my goodness - I am so happy. I met him on saturday near Banbury and got 6 lights - 3 identical, one broken and 2 others. The 3 identical ones are Faro ETS lights - with a transformer built in to the light and just a 2-prong halogen bulb. It took a whole to sort out a mount and work out where to put it. I have one at each end of the workshop over the 2 main areas where I will need light. Here's a phot of one of the lights turned on - the bright circle on the bench is the light it casts. You can see it is about as bright as the sun. It is absolutely FANTASTIC.

I have 2 lights spare if anyone wants - PM me for details - plus there are I think still 2 whole sets available - he lives near Birmingham.

Looks very good i brought one of those 2ft twin strip lights on a stand cost a lot wish i had thought of what you have very nice well done

That's a nice but of lateral thinking and a really good new use for the old lights.

Lidl have lamps with 11.5W in three adjustable LED spots for £12. 11.5W of LED is a lot of light. 20,000 hr life expectancy with non replaceable lamps. I can't speak for the life expectancy obviously, but at £12 they're worth a punt. I changed the whole of my last house to LED with no problem - I had 14 lamps in two rooms, but the whole house switched on didn't amount to more than 180W.

Thanks for comments. I looked for the Lidl lights but also could not see them - must be expired. I forgot to add I paid £150 for all 6 lights - oh and a sterilising machine - useful for home surgery ;). So if I sell the 2 spares for about 30 quid or so I will have sorted out some outstanding lighting for under £100
Cheers Mark
