Hello , I'm trying to put together my first workbench from a design in Chris Simpsons Essential Guide to Woodwork . Softwood can be used for the underframe but hardwood is needed for the back board and worktop. Can anyone advise me as to what woods would be ideal for this and what would be the cheaper alternatives especially in the hardwood. Thanks alot.

Paul,

Well beech is the traditional choice in this country, and not too hideously expensive. There's a run down of some of the options and their pros and cons on the Workbench Page (recently restored to us by the wonder of the Wayback Machine). I also found this page: http://www.workbenchdesign.net/ which I include simply because it might be of interest.

Cheers, Alf
