My workshop is a discrace as it is not really very functional. The space is an old uninsulated dirt floor french barn giving me two spaces of 40m2 each so 80 m2 total. I was hoping for some advice and suggestions for layout and construction improvements. I currently make doors and staircases but would like to start making bespoke boxes but the enviroment is a bit damp in the winter. I arn't rich so can't spend a fortune but need to get the shop up to scratch.

thanks

I would concentrate on sealing up draughts, insulating and getting some heat in there. :)

One thing you could do if you cannot afford to insulate it all. Build a separate room out of 4x2 with a ceiling, board and insulate it. Make it your assembly/work area. That way you can keep yourself and the timber cosy in winter :)

cheers carl, i froze this winter and my compressor broke through ice. France gets vet cold nhere I have a large wood burner but not enough. Insulation is the ,key

If you can fit some form of ceiling and insulate above it. Lowering the overall height will drastically reduce heat loss and the area will warm up quicker. However concentrating on having a warm/ dry work area would probably be easier and quicker. Then you could insulate elsewhere as and when you could :)
