I'm making some dowel dogs for my bench. I've tried coat hanger wire that doesn't seem to have enough Spring, ls there a way to get a bit of springiness. May be different wire?

MIG welding wire works quite nicely esp. stainless - very springy. I'd offer you a piece of mine but I've forgotten where I left it! Cheers, W2S

That's neat Biskit. Think you just saved me some money so thank you. I'd been thinking about using some sort of copper sheet contrivance (don't ask, I don't know why I didn't think of wire), to secure a planing stop, for some reason (ignorance I suppose), I'd not contemplated making my own dogs as well. I need to get some oak dowel anyway so thanks again!

(edit) :Anyone know a good supplier of these ball catches/ brassware other than me just going on ebay? Cheers

Piano wire is very handy stuff as well. It can be bent but has a good amount of spring as well. We (locksmiths) use it for quite a few "tools". In fact, we make springs out of it at a pinch. You can get it from model shops in various thicknesses.

Those wonderful old "things a handy boy can make" books use piano wire for all sorts of things!
