Probably been done to death but recommendations on reliable wood screws anyone, Torx or Pozi? Screwfix /Toolstation are convenient for me.

I find the screwfix gold stews adequate for general work, stainless for outdoors, stainless is brittle though so likes to snap ,the torx head are generally better quality. For good work that might be seen you can't beat slotted brass, ideally in a cup with slots aligned.
For general use Timco Velocity and awkward jobs where driving may not be perfect or very close to an edge Reisser Cutters. For very heavy jobs then Heco Topix and for just heavy then Strongtie, Timco Index or Screw Tite are ok. I always buy what I need rather than what is easily available, Screwfix used to sell Heco at one time but for some reason they dropped the range as being to special / trade!!

Saying that I am still trying to find antique bronze screws 1 & 1/4 to hang a door on antique bronze hinges but thats another story.

I bloody love Torx, so far I’ve gotten them from screwfix but that could always change

I'm gradually changing to Torx headed screws as my stocks ran down.....
I could only easily buy from screwfix living in France.....I used to buy by the thousand....
for example when I was there (France) screws were roughly 5 times the price of the UK.....
Now in Greece the price is roughly on Par....
have found that with drill drivers the cheaper Phillips headed screws were OK but after getting an Impact driver I just bought the Goldscrews.....Now the Torx headed screws are even tougher....
Also I only bought the Whera Screw driver bits and then the Diamond coated.....no such option here... I have not found a decent Philips bit yet so the Torxs bits do last about 10 times longer....
hence the change up.....
Not quite the same but have just found a stockist of BRASS threaded rod, all sizes from 5mm
to 20mm...they also stock Brass washers and the nuts.....
Stainless is available up to 30mm and the same for Zinc plated steel....
It seems that because we are a small island the fishermen need brass from stock....Brilliant for me...

Spax are good. Their flooring screws are next on the shopping list.

Reisser cutter screws are great. Although I love torx, if you are going to use them it will be infuriating if you have a mix of both torx and pozi so I have reverted to just pozi except for very small ie 3.0 gauge screws where torx are far superior and for those I use the Axminster Woodspur screws, but for larger gauges Reisser Cutters are better, Woodspur come up a bit 'thin' gauged. Ultimate screws from Ironmongery Direct come up a bit 'thick'. Avoid basic screws with no cutting technology at all, unless just for into wall-plugs. Sometimes the hold in a fully threaded screw will be better than that in one which is not threaded all the way. Ribs on the countersink are a good feature. Some screws have too big an arris at the top of the countersink. Very cheap screws may shear off at the head.
I use the cheap goldscrews from Screwfix, seem fine to me. They drive pretty well and are pozi which I like as that's my most used drive type.

Ironic, isn't it that traditional good quality brass screws do not hold as well. Agree about the visual effect.
I've just used some Goldscrews and found them a little disappointing. TurboGold are better. I find Reisser better than Spax, I'll stick to them when my Spax have been used. I'm too old and well equiped to change to torx or Robertson screws, but were I starting out I would start with one of them.
Torx every time unless it is for a show piece. Torx tend not to suffer “cam out” which both pozi and Phillips do.
Torx can strip pretty badly when the drivers wear. I did a lot of flooring using little tx10 screws and the drivers stripped a lot, at which point they strip the screw if you're not careful. Having a pozi cam out is possibly preferable.

spax are great but crazy pricey. I love the composite deck screws they have a small head and a 2nd thread. on say adirondacks they look amazing. or even as nail substitutes on exterior work.
OK guys. Many thanks for your input. Probably go Turbo gold Pozi. Job not special but I'll give them a try as I'm fed up with heads shearing easily on cheapos.

Turbo gold with the drill bit style tip, Wickes did a simalar screw years ago not sure if they still do???

Just a quick Q for the torx users, I agree great for screwing in, but how the heck with any fI ish do you then screw them out for repairs, mods etc? I haven’t found a way yet!

I really like hex headed bolts like this, they are so much stronger than screws and do require pre-drilling but they have the best grip.
