I intend to set myself a target next year to identify as many different woods as I can. Right now a lot of timber looks the same to me. What's hard wood and what's softwood. Lot's of the grain structure is very similar, unless of course I do have a garage full of the same stuff!!
 
Then you should start with the three historic British building timbers. English oak (Quercus robur), English elm (Ulmus minor and Ulmus procera) elm's a tricky one and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).
 
Well, not a bad place to start would be to seek out a copy of World Woods in Colour by William A Lincoln. I think it's still being printed by the publisher Stobart Davies at about £30, but I did a quick online search and found copies, presumably second hand, ranging in price between about £6 and £21.
