Could anyone tell me what these woods are? All picked up from an offcuts bin at the builder's merchants, but they didn't know either.

They are all photo'd on top of a white Jet dust extractor, to get an idea of relative colours.

This is varied light and dark brown, with strong grain stripes. Soft to cut and turn.

This is very orange coloured...not sure if the colour is natural or the result of some treatment? Tends to tear a lot and is soft.

I think this is Sapele, but could be completely wrong?

Anyone who can shed light, gratefully appreciated...

i think the first one is oak, the second one larch and the third could be lenka

First pici I'm sure is Ash, second some sort of fir third not a clue

Speciment 1, Oak? soft to turn? Don't think so!
Unless it's a camera thing, the pinkish tinge on the end of that looks more like one of the firs/cyprus/larch.
Can't say for the third one.

I've changed my mind, the first is american grey elm the others no idea.

+1 for ash for the first piccy. Thought the end-on-view looks a little like the colour of olive-ash. Does it have a particular smell when cut?

Ash for the first, I don't tend to use much softwood so no clue on the second, but at a guess it looks like dougy fir to me. The last one looks like meranti.
