As I don't really know what your "pound shops" are like , this may not help any. At my dollar store they stock replacement mop and broom handles for a dollar or in some cases two. These are hardwood dowels of inch thickness and 4 ft. length, many unpainted . I think ours are maple and if care is excercised , nice straight grained examples could be chosen. Just a thought.
 
I did think about using broom handles but wasn't sure what the thickness would be. I'm after 19mm (3/4") which seems to be a difficult size to get locally, thankfully it's readily available online though.
