Hi all

I want to cut out some stars for Xmas but i don't know much about different types of wood. Up until now I have just played around with scraps of plywood I have scrounged but I want to try something a bit smarter looking. I know I want them about 6mm thick and at least 8cm across. Can anyone recommend a good wood to use, and more importantly - where can I buy it?

Thanks,

Jimi

Jimi, I can't advise on types of wood, but take a look here. One of the local businesses might be able to supply some offcuts, it's worth a phone call.
We'll be in Hebden Bridge next week if the weather's fine. Nice place.

Hi Jim. The problem with thin wood is that it tends to warp and twist very easily. You stand a good chance of keeping it flat if it is well seasoned and the moisture content is quite low, about 10%. If you get the wood you are after keep it flat on the floor somewhere but not near a heat source such as a radiator. My supplier in Essex normally has what you are after. If you are interested send me a PM and I will let you have details.

Jimi.

I am no expert on different types of wood, I use mainly (Baltic Birch Ply), but most saw mills/timber yards, are only to glad to sell off cuts of various types of hard/soft wood.

My local supplier, (Woodstock, of Falmouth), sells it by the pallet load when available, I have an order in with them at present, they will then make up the pallet loads as they cut timber to order for customers, you of course have to take a chance on what you get.

So it could be worth visiting a wood yard in your area, to see if they can offer the same or similar service.

Take care.

Hi....sorry for the blatant plug, but I have just started working at a wood recycling project in King's Lynn in Norfolk. Please spread the word for all those you know in the area. We have lots of different types of wood on offer and very low prices. I already have one of your members on here as a regular customer.

This project is used to support the West Norfolk Mind charity. We are always looking for good quality wood donations and tools. All wood is either resold or used to make furniture or arts and crafts.

I hope to see you there. Mon-Fri 0930-1530

If anyone wants to ask any questions then please feel free to message me.

Thanks.
