First gate is pretty much done...

To hold it all together I put some very dry square oak pegs into round holes with the idea that the gates will dry around them.

The gates you saw and liked had each piece split into two halves, which automatically made a matching pair. I'm guessing that you (sensibly!) avoided a lot of frustration and wasted material while you learned to split consistently and chose to make a pair with each part still in the round. Nevertheless, they still look lightweight but strong, and they match each other very well. I bet you enjoyed making them.
