I've been asked to replace some treads on a set of outdoor steps.
On looking at the job in question, the treads are splitting in two as they are made from a single timber which is 297x47mm. They overhang the cut strings by 50mm which coupled with the fact they are so wide and naturally weaker along the grain each one is on the verge of splitting.

Having not seen treated timber that wide I can imagine it's pretty pricey per metre. So I was looking to replace them with two 150mm timbers instead to keep the cost down.
Once attached I'm planning to paint them with some anti slip paint. As the grip type strips that have been put on previously are all detaching.

Does this sound like a sensible plan or are there better solutions?

Have you thought of decking planks, treated with pre cut grooves for grip and shedding water?

No I hadn't actually, that's a good call. My only concern is that the rise would change and not conform with regs. I'll have to remeasure that one.
