There always seem to be far more questions about Bandsaws but we don't (but it seems we should) have a bandsaw section?! :?

Maybe because a BS is merely a woodworking tool and is part of woodworking in general and although the section is called scrollsaws (yet another americanism) it really covers Fretwork, Intarsa and Marquetry

I only ever look at new posts so dont even notice which section a post is in.

As above scrollsawing can be a specific hobby, like woodturning hence its own section.

I think there should be sharpening section :D

For me, as on most forums, the sections are irrelevant. I just check unread and new posts and open those that might interest me. Scroll sawing doesn't so I just ignore those. I do sometimes seem to miss interesting for sale items though!

There maybe should be a machinery section though.
We have a hand tool one.
Indeed, a pretty obvious omission. I asked for one two years ago.

I like the way scroll sawing and metalwork have their own sub-forums, that way I don't have to see anything there.

Personally, I think the reason for a scroll saw section is that with the possible exception of band saw boxes, the scroll saw is the only machine which is used solely to produce a finished article such as ornaments of various kinds, intarsia, marquetry, etc, etc (O.K. perhaps with the addition of a little bit of sanding or routing machinery sometimes).

Certainly I can't think of another machine which is used solely to produce a finished article, apart from the above band saw boxes example. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

In addition to that, the UK, and indeed I think the whole of mainland Europe, is pretty poor when it comes to catering for scroll sawing (or whatever you want to call it), certainly when compared to the USA. So perhaps this Forum saw a need (sorry!) and decided to cater for it? Our scroll saw section is certainly pretty well visited anyway.

As to having a separate section just for machinery, personally I agree with other posts, I look at just about everything, including turning for example (in which I have no more than a passing general interest) so for me it doesn't matter what section a new post comes from, if the title looks interesting I open it.

In addition we already have a section "Buying Advice & Tool Reviews" which often covers machinery of all sorts - including band saws.

And finally, the more separate sections there are the more difficult it can become for a new poster to decide in which section to enter his/her new subject post.

So personally I'm more than happy with the status quo.

(Sorry phil.p, I don't remember "N0legs excellent epistle". Care to enlighten me/us?)

It's nice to search for different items of interest. If there was a Bandsaw section, I would still be looking at other sections as well, as scrollsaws and bandsaws still crop up in other sections.

Still think we need a machinery section.

There are more and more threads of how do I do this or that with machines, as well as machine restoration threads, which don't really come under the buying advice thread.

There could be locked threads about safety at the top as well.

OK, personally I'm not strongly against the idea, and could certainly live with a new, what, "Machines only" section?

But just as a matter of interest, where would you post - just for example - a new query of your own about setting up a band saw (or choosing a new one) in the Forum as it is today?

And ditto, a question about setting up a table saw?

But not quibbling, just as a reminder - the OP asked why we need a Scroll Saw section. The Q wasn't why haven't we got a machines section.
