I would like to start a small woodworking enterprise and would appreciate any advice you can give me on the best, mid-range scroll saw to buy. What is a good speed and what features should I look for? Thank you.

Hi,
I have been scrolling for nearly 70 years but still have a lot to learn but here is my two penny worth. ----If you are going to cut a range of products and types of Fretwork at a professional level you should consider the following.
1. Decent motor ( 120 w+)
2.Variable speed
3. Takes pinless( plain) blades
4.Good weight and cutting table
5.Easy blade change
6. Good dust removal
7.If possible variable stroke length
8. Reasonably priced spares

If you are after a new machine and can afford a Hegner or Excalibur these are as good as any--- If your budget is limited and you don't mind secondhand, a Delta 540 or Q3 are good machines , or if you get lucky a secondhand Record 21 or 26 inch ( RBI HAWK MADE) are excellent machines which do occasionally appear for sale in the UK ,you can buy them new direct from the manufacturer in the USA, their service is excellent

Hope this is helpful

John
