For apples, fruit in general, in fact all small spindle projects where the sanding will be done by hand? I've used the little boxes of 4 different grits from Axy (about £12) and they're OK but quite stiff so not helpful for getting into tight places like the hollow out for the stalk.

I've also used a more cloth backed roll from Axy that came in individual grits that was more malleable. Is there a classic that seasoned turners tend to go for all the time? I'm talking about rolls that are about an inch wide.

for everything now I use the Ryhno grip from Richard, if I want a 1" strip I cut one off a roll, I have a cheap pair of kitchen scissors that cut it just fine. I have tried a fair few different abrasives over the years, these seem to be the best of the lot so far anyway.

The box of strips from Axi' is not the best Rob, too stiff as you say. Their J Flex rolls are good quality, nice and flexible and consistent grit.

Richard Findlay supplies one of the Rhino products and I find them the best for me personally, flexible, consistent grit and long lasting, he uses them himself professionally I believe which says something perhaps

Years ago I used to use what was known as "production paper" for sanding. it was glue then cutting grit followed by another coat of glue. It lasted for ages. Can't find it now, anyone know where I can still get some?

Thanks all. Final question. That Rhyno abrasive is Velcro backed which to me suggests its for use on a power sander. Is that what you all use freehand too ie handheld?

I've since found an old thread from 2011 when Richard was trialling it and its clear you all do use it hand held as well as for power sanding. Great, I'll buy some. Many thanks.

One of my hobbies is medieval living history specializing in the crafts of the 15th century. Our carpenter uses Shark skin as sandpaper and that really makes a beautiful smooth surface. If anyone lives in Wales, dogfish are washed up all the time (same family)

I have tried all sorts of abrasive and like Kim I have now settled on the Rhyno Grip from Richard Findley. Not only do you get a great finish but it seems to keep its grit a lot longer than most other types I have used.

LOL...thanks Bourbon. I must confess I was hoping for a slightly more accessible supply than beach-combing Wales for dead dogfish :)
Thats the trouble with you youngsters today. No dedication.

... but just think of the fresh air and exercise instead of being stuck in a workshop breathing sawdust :)

That's right, instead we can look forward to the stench of rotting fish :)

I notice if you were going to buy 1m of each grit it actually works out cheaper to buy two of the half metre selection packs...
