I recently bought my first router which is a Black & Decker jobbie

I recently had a mishap, either prompted by not tightening the router bit enough or by trying to cut too much material off. The router bit flew out of the router.

Luckily I wasn't injured but the collet I was using has been mis-shapen somehow and is no longer a smooth fit with router bits.

The collet was for 1/4" bits (6.35mm) and if I'm not mistaken the shank size on the router is 12mm.

This seems to match the dimensions I'm looking for but seems very expensive for what it is:

Am I looking for the right thing??

Thanks

Rick

That is a collet reduction sleeve- it goes in a larger collet to use smaller shank cutters- eg half inch router to use 8mm cutters.

Were you using one of those or a smaller collet- if you unscrew the collet but you will see what is inside.
If you do need a reduction sleeve, that is very expensive. 12mm may not be a common size though.

I suspect that you are looking for a collet rather than a sleeve though. What size are your cutters?

I have a set of 1/4" router bits and it's the 1/4" collet which needs replacing.

The collets which come with the router look like this, though this one seems to be the wrong size.

It might well be worth checking your local paper, car boot sale, ebay, gumtree, etc. You can often pick up Black and Decker routers for next to nothing and will probably be cheaper than just the collet alone.
