Hello ,

I’m interested in these two compressors, the first:

http://bostitch.ie/products/compressor-details/c50-u/
lists noise levels as : LWP 71.2 and LWA 94

the second:

http://www.metabo.co.uk/Product-catalog ... 5c2.0.html

lists sound pressure level as LpA 88dBA.

Basically I want the quieter of the two – so which is it?

Does LpA correspond to either LWP or LWA?

I’ve had no reply whatever to any of my inquiries from bostitch over a few weeks now noise related and other. Mailed metabo last night but not confident that they can answer in relation to other companys sound level units.

Any info appreciated , cheers

Whilst I cant say with any certainty on what all of the jargon is, what it corresponds to, how it compares etc. my opinion is that the Bostitch's LWA and the Metabo's LPA would be more in line with the noise levels I'd expect from air compressors of this type. So a difference a 6dB... hardly anything. You could consider a silencer box for whatever you decide to go for - here's a good thread for one built by Howie a while ago: air-compressor-noise-solution-t59432.html. I did the same but a little bigger for my Axminster compressor and managed to trim the noise from 94db to 70db (if the app on my Iphone is to be believed) so was definitely worth the effort.

Cheers Alan,

Was hoping to somehow get around box construction, bit tired of making things for my tools at the minute , would rather make things with them!

I don't think you can compare the two values. I think one is the actual noise the machine emits and the other is something to do with the typical noise taking into account the environment.

Really to compare the two you just need to listen to then and make a decision.

My small compressor is just noisy.

Hello Mick,

Nowhere overhere in Ireland where I could test these two models or anywhere with any great selection of compressors, you're spoilt for choice in the UK for tools compared to over here, and with the lack of competition it's also much more expensive even with carriage taken into account, think I'll just take the plunge and get a 50l , now just wondering where a 3 dBa increase to 97 on the ABAC model would be a massive increase in noise as I have read it increases exponentially, feck!!!

Hi, noise is measured on a logarithmic scale and an increase of 3 dBa is equivalent to doubling the sound power.

That means a machine running at 97 dBa is twice as loud as a machine which runs at 94 dBa
