One with a scale and that can stand alone on its edge for the same use as in the picture, say around 30cm-60cm

You mean to set planer knives? If so that's absolutely not what you want.

You want a bit of straight grained off-cut, anything very roughly around 8" x 1" x 0.5" . Ideally a pale, fine grained timber that will clearly show the pencil marks and is dead true and stable. If you haven't got the right stuff in your scrap pile PM me with your address and I'll put something in the post.
