Had a look at a door and frame that the customer wants sorting for the winter. It's a modern looking construction and I noticed the existing draught seal fitted to the frame had been painted over and was pretty useless.

I'd like to change it but I noticed the groove it sat in was about 4-5mm wide. I'm used to using draught deal that sits in a much thinner gap.

Any ideas what I can replace it with and where from?

Cheers

I don't fit doors or frames or doors to frames, but I do fit locks. And it's my understanding that sometimes what you see sitting in a groove is intumescent strip rather than draught seal. Intumescent strip is a fire measure; it expands and seals the door-frame gap in the face of a fire.

I'm always very careful with it as you're not supposed to tamper with it or break it.

Of course, you might indeed be seeing an unusal draught strip. A good clue however is that intumescent strip does nothing for draughts. Unless there's a fire.

Reddiseals do a few draught seals that fit a 5mm groove, its fairly common in joinery.

It's not an intumescent strip.

It's a front door
