Hi All,

I'm wanting to add a pillar drill to the workshop (Spare Bedroom) Mainly it's going to be used for drilling entry holes for scrollsaw work and maybe see a forstner bit or two but not much metal but mainly drilling into wood.

My budget is MAX £100 (Ideally less) which will hopefully get me one new, there are so many available on eBay etc.

Can anyone recommend a cheap one?

Cheers,

Jon.

My father looked for a bench top pillar and drill whilst I looked for a floor standing unit. We both fancied a Startrite Mercury 5 speed. Reasonably accurate and fairly cheap on eBay. The bench top drills were going for about twice the price in a floor standing unit! So we both bought floor standing units. The base can be removed and rather than cutting down the column, for £15 a short column of steel was acquired to covert it from a floor standing to a bench top. My father now has a drill he can convert from bench top to floor standing as he pleases....or needs.

They both cost less than £80 from eBay. For woodworking they are great. If your making wooden clocks you probably need something better like a Meddings.

I've just picked up a beauty from a forum member who is selling off all his workshop machinery. It's a 16 speed Nutool bench mounted pillar drill. It's old but built to last, I paid £70 for it. Will post some pictures when I get chance.

Hi Jon,

Here's the pictures of my bench drill which I have just purchased. All I can suggest is post a wanted ad in the wanted section of the forum or keep an eye open on ebay they are about. The last picture shows a 5 1/2 inch piece which I cut off the column as I found the drill to high to work with comfortably.
