Hi all, I know this is a bit basic but I am hopeless at identifying wood. I picked up this piece from a local wood recycling place. It looked really gritty but I put it through the planer thicknesser and I really like it. I think it’s tulip wood (poplar)? No idea what I will do with it yet! The photos are after and before planing (wrong order I know…

It's Tulipwood or American poplar. Good for painting. Sadly, the greens and purples quickly become browns when exposed to light and air!
 
Poplar/Tulip wood. It ranges in colour from a pale cream through greens, walnut browns and purples. Machines, cuts and moulds superbly. Finishes really well, paints a treat and is very stable. Perfect for internal joinery but do not use it outside.
