Hi, i am looking to buy a bandsaw to make small boxes, what do you guys recommend, budget is about £150

I started looking for machines around that price some time ago, I soon realized to find something worthy of using I'd better triple my budget lol, anyway I decided to buy a used example to start with, an elderly ELU in need of cleaning up and new guides, £80 for the saw £30 for guides etc and a few Tuff blades and I've got my sub £150 bandsaw that I'm enjoying using until I can afford a better model but I think I'll still hang on to the ELU to save changing blades so often

Whatever you do, don't get the ones from Aldi/Lidl. They are not good enough for anything. With cut depth of 80mm, even with TuffSaw blades, you are limited to what you can actually make. I had one of those in secondhand version to start with, paid £40 for one, but only able to make tiny boxes. Managed to sell that for the same money. Phew!

"Upgraded" to a Scheppach Baso 1.0, which was better, but still a bit small. Paid £80 for that with a stand. Quality between the two was night and day. Still, it was too small but I was able to sell that for the same price, but kept the stand it came with. :p

I now have another used grand-dad bandsaw. The Kity 413, with cut depth of 150mm. Paid about £90 for it from memory. I think that is the minimum useful size to make good size bandsaw boxes with. If you have the cash and space, find one with up to 300mm cut depth.

Keep an eye out on the buy/sale forum. Good luck.

Adrian
