You may remember last week a bought a sterling 1000 lathe
And I would like to turn pens on it or at least sand and polish pens

well I shouted out for a chuck and the chuck has arrived and now I'm waiting for a mandrel to arrive this is the one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300689356169? ... _500wt_969

But I looked on the masterchuck 2 web site and the smallest jaws only close to 3/8 which I think is around 9.5mm

and a mandrel is 7mm

I would like to know what to do now and how do I get around this (I said I would make some pens for Christmas (me and my big mouth it would have been cheaper to buy the pens))

My lathe shaft is 3/4 16 unf

Can you mount a morse taper in your lathe? I use a drill type chuck to mount very small items. This sort of thing. They're quite cheap.

Hi Tom,
I'd say that the very best way would be to use a collet chuck to hold the mandrel - although to get the most from it you need a hollow headstock.

The bestcollet chuck would be the Axminster Junior chuck...

http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-junior-chuck-prod22446/

One of the included collets is the 6-7mm and this should hold your mandrel shaft and allow you to extend or retract it to expose just enough length to hold the blanks.

This is better than the Jacob's chuck method but not cheap.

Another method would be to make a wooden collet (or jaw linings) to fit into the jaws of your existing chuck drilled to the same diameter as the shaft of your mandrel so that tightening your chuck, clamps the shaft of the mandrel. Shape a length of wood to fit into your chuck jaws at their optimum diameter and mount it into the chuck - a top-hat shape works well in parallel jaws with the brim on the outside. Drill it through with an appropriate drill (the size of your mandrel) held in a Jacob's chuck in the tailstock and then remove the wood from the chuck and put a sawcut lengthwise in the wood from the edge of the brim to the centre hole. If you then put the collet in the chuck with the mandrel shaft down the hole, when you tighten the chuck it should grip the mandrel and it should run true.

You'll get the idea if you look at Mike Peace's excellent video here around 39 minutes (the rest is also worth a look too) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=aUXil-5dEeo.

Alternatively you could even make a wooden collet chuck like this one....

Big thank you for your post and info and of cause giving me the solution I needed
I think I will be going for the axminster collet chuck

Going on holiday now see you all next weekend

Tom

Take half a pen blank, preferably something hard like oak or beech, drill a hole the size of a snug fit on the mandrel, (6.5 or 7 mm?), place between centres, turn down to appropriate diameter to be a good fit in your jaws (15-20 mm?). remove from lathe, put a couple of saw cuts down 3/4 the length of it and voilà - one collet chuck insert for your chuck. FOC.

excuse the drawing! its the first time in years i've used sketchup.

If it is similar to the Clarke CWL1000 then I'm afraid you are going to struggle because the lathe spindle is solid & has no morse taper.

Clarke CWL 1000

You could use a 3/4" x 16 to 1/2" X 20 adaptor (£12 + £3) a suitable drill chuck (£5).

The only upgrade path would seem to be a different lathe.

I would like to thank you all for responding to my plea for help

I'm going to axminster today to pick up a Junior chuck with a 3/4 16 unf

as robbo said " a solid shaft with a 3/4 thread "

now I'm going to hunt for a new live centre but with a taper as the old one is threaded and not in good condition

Tom

ps

I have a CNC machine and would be happy to cut anything for members on this forum for free with in reason
