Been trying to persuade an ancient chainsaw to work again (was working quite well a couple of years ago) and it looks as if it's down to the carburettor, a Walbro WA series. Problem is that within the WA series, there seem to be a whole range of variants, and these have very different arrangements of the gasket and/or diaphragm under the circuit plate. The repair kits for these little horrors contain a whole range of gaskets, but no obvious information anywhere on which ones to use for which carb.

Does anyone know how to identify the exact model of carb from the lettering/numbering on the body, as the Walbro website doesn't appear to help  . It's definitely a WA, which is moulded into the body, but beyond that??????????????

Thanks, guys. Unfortunately, it's not in the list from Maltrout.
It's a Frontier FS35, which appears to be almost identical (but, of course, not quite!) to the Danarm 1-36, Husqvarna 35, Jonsered 35-1 and Pioneer 350. All pretty ancient (1980s-ish) saws, but very well made and also very handy when you need a small semi-top-handle saw.
And who said that re-badging only started when Chaiwanese stuff began to come in....

Hi Dick

According to Husqvarna's website the carb is a Walbro WA58 A.
If you check their website they have a support section with manuals and it list the chainsaw parts. You should be able to compare your carb with the one in the manual to see if it it the same one.Dont know whether spare parts are still available for it though. There are a few specialists out there who only sell engine parts so it may be possible to get a service kit for the carb. If you dont have any luck with that let me know as I have some good contacts in the chainsaw world who may be able to help out.

I think I have actually sharpened one of these saws a few years ago for the boss at where I get my vehicles serviced. Must admit I like the newer saws with all the safety features!

Thanks again folks - I will follow up that Husky link (possibly only to find that the Husky version used a different carb........... :( .).

Getting spares for Walbros is no problem (especially with son-in-law in the States) but the repair kit comes with gaskets and diaphragms for every model of WA, and possibly every one of WT, that exists. So it's a bit of a lottery getting exactly the right combinations, especially when the distinctions between some of them are subtle in the extreme. Ah well, keeps me out of mischief............

Take your point about safety - has to be top of the list with a chainsaw. This one is new enough to have proper chainbrake, but it's not anti-vibration, which is a bit of a downer.

A trip to Cornwall and the Eden project would be great, but it's one h**l of a long way :D

You are a HERO! Knowing what to look for, the 58 cast into the side of the carb was pretty good confirmation - doh!
Problem had been not realising that the "part number" listed on the left of this page http://wem.walbro.com/walbro/group2.asp?FamilyName=WA actually meant "model number".

According to the WA58 page, it looks as if the plausible selection I'd made reassembling the carb last time was probably the right one.

So the starting problem looks to be elsewhere :(

Had a look at the relevant Husky page in Clymer Chainsaw Manual 10th edition, and there seem to be quite a few detail differences between the Husky and the Frontier, but the carb is clearly the same.

Thanks again.
