The instrument originated with African slaves in the Caribbean and N America, evolved from various African types of instrument made in the same way - skin stretched over a hollow bowl or frame, with a neck and strings. The name might be from African roots (places or materials) or from something in Portuguese. Possibly both since there were many different variations across the region. First recorded as "banza" in the 17th century, and then mentioned as banzas, bandone, bandogue and others before finally settling on banjo some time in the 19th century.
Hi i am in Co. Durham (Barnard Castle) and have three Wadkin RS lathes you are welcome to visit and view the lathes and measure anything you want i have all the Wadkin attachments to go with them and some special ones made by myself i have also drilled an 8mm hole through the headstock and the tailstock to make the removal of the drive centers etc easier.
