Hi all i'm new to this forum but i am looking for some advice/ guidance regarding a Wadkin MA morticer which i purchased for our new joinery that we have just set up.

Unfortunately the bevel/ mitre gears are well past their best and unusable after the main nut came off and rattled between them causing a proper mess. I have tried all of the local engineering suppliers and online but cannot find the gears that are fitted to the machine which are a 25 tooth 1.5 mod drive gear and 38 tooth gear which is on the head. The machine in general is in very good condition and I would really like to keep it going.

Does anybody out there know of anybody or anywhere that will be able to supply these new or even second hand to get me going?

Welcome to the forum.
You are asking something very specific about a very specific, and not exactly common, machine. It's not something we are terribly good at. Someone might know, but it's going to be a long shot.

Have you tried the American forums like Lumberjocks? There are guys there who rebuild the most amazing of old machines, you might have better luck there.

Meanwhile, I'll PM Myfordman on your behalf. I don't know if this is his bag but he is an excellent engineer and generous with his knowledge.

I have thought about some of the American sites but would try a bit more local to start.
You are right saying that it is not a common machine but i have to say it would be good to save as it is solid and otherwise in very good condition, it would be a shame not to save it over a couple of oddity gears. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hopefully Wallace may be along in a bit, the Canadian forum is where you want to be for vintage machinery.
 
There are companies that stock lots of gears that are part bored which machined to suit the application. Basically the hard part is done for you.
1.5module is a metric gear and I'd be surprised if Wadkin would have used metric gears that long ago.
The nearest imperial gear to 1.5module is 16DP (diametral pitch)

As well as stock gears they will make specials to your drawings.

I also think you should look for some precut gears that can be machined to fit the shafts........though that particulat model is unknown to me. A åicture of the damaged gears could maybe help me visualize things.

I am sure there is a way to repair it. We just need to find that way.

Yes tried advanced machinery with no joy along with others. Ondrives and Davall have also been tried with no joy.

I have found a metric pair but are straight cut and 3 mod which is not ideal but will definitely try the other suggestions.
If i do get hold of a set that i need to bore out and key that's not a problem as i will revert back to my toolmaking days.

I will let you know how i get on if i find an answer.

Although its been a long time since I posted this problem I have seemed to have found an answer after the straight cut gears failed. I contacted Rodriguez gears (RAR) and found a set of spiral gears which are close. AMS wanted an extortionate £1700 for a copy of the originals and at £124 from Rodriguez it was a no brainer. The gears I ordered were SBS3-3020R and SBS3-2030L. I am lucky enough to have access to a wire eroder so cut the centre 1" hole and 1/8" key slot out, skimmed 7mm from the back of the small gear and placed a 2mm washer under the large. At the same time I replaced the bearings etc. After a hard week of running the black finish on the gears remains untouched so I'm now confident that the fix is good. Hopefully this should help some people who are struggling. I'll try and post some pictures later.
