Hi Everyone, It's been a few years since I posted anything here, although I do occasionally sign in to see what's going on.

I have noticed a few people buying and refurbishing old wadkin gear and when comes to a repaint, it appears that a light green hammered type paint is the usual suggestion. It just so happens that my AGS 10 has been finished in this hammered pain and I decided to alter my motor housing to enable the fitting of an extraction outlet underneath the housing but on the lower side of the saw body.
following the attack on the housing - an oblong steel box with rounded edges - with an angle grinder and spraying with primer, I tried to locate some of the said hammered paint and discovered that Hammerite no longer produce it, However, I did find what appeared to be a near match on fleabay but couldn't find any contact details for the vendor, to check the colour for a match.

I then contacted the chap from whom I bought the saw, who has a small company dealing with new and used machinery. I recall that he told me at the time that he used to work for the Wadkin Bursgreen factory in Fencehouses, County Durham and repaired and serviced these machines. I asked him where I could obtain the above paint and he advised that Wadkin had never used a hammered type paint. It appears this was an after sales method used when the original paint could not be readily obtained. He was kind enough to check his suppliers for me and gave me the paint number as follows.

Paint Number RAL 6010. Supplied by Tor Paints, Birtley, County Durham.

Given that my machine has the afore-mentioned hammered paint and there are other members who have apparently used this too, it would be useful if anyone, particularly those who have a lot of knowledge of Wadkin gear, could confirm or otherwise, if the information I have received is correct. Perhaps if someone like Scrit is still sharing his considerable knowledge of the subject.

I hope this is helpful and look forward to replies.

Warm regards to all members. Jim. :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Max Power, I do recall Scrit being somewhat disenchanted a few years back, it's such a shame he's no longer around to allow us the benefit of his knowledge.

Andy RV, thank you for the heads up, it looks like a very good forum for info on Wadkin gear and other older English machines.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Jim.

jimturn? Scrit can be found, or he used to be, on that same canadian forum. He and JACK613 communicated I seem to remember.

Hammered paint on AGS's? I tried Wickes version, diluted to proper viscosity and sprayed on. It's exactly what it says on the tin..wick. Soft, scratches easily, flakes off - despite a full rust removal and conversion beforehand.

I couldn't find a Hammerite to match the metallic Sagar green, and despite helpful comments from regulars here, specially mixed brews were prohibitively expensive.

Let me know please if you find a good alternative; I can't get paint mailed over here, but I have three adult children on the mainland, so I might consider a second makeover.

Scrit did make an appearance for a while but has now gone awol again. Sammy I'm sure the place I get my paint did hammered to a RAL code

That's interesting Mark; how durable have you found it on, say, a machine painted 3-5 years ago? Wickes stuff is very brittle and jumps off the metal faster than a Page Three Girl's bra. By comparison, some of the old Bursgreen metallic stuff is like granite. Wonder if it was baked on?

Who's your supplier please? My son lives in Alnwick, but visits York regularly, so I might ask him to divert a bit if 'your man' was local to Spennymoor or Durham.

Hi Sammy heres there site http://www.cmf-ltd.com/ it might be worth giving them a call to make sure. Its only 5miles from spennymoor. I've always used there quick dry enamel which gives a nice finish but if you get a decent ding it will chip down to metal. I am starting a big disc and bobbin sander soon, so I thought I would try the paint with more solids in it to see how that holds up.

Appreciated Mark; I think Sim could divert to them without too much trouble. Then I can pick it up from him next time I'm over.

Hi Guys, I'm at this moment waiting for a delivery of light green hammered paint from an ebay company called Bitec. In the next few days I will be painting my ags 10 motor housing and I will let you know how it matches, goes on and in the longer term, how it performs re dings and such like.

SammyQ, if you're interested in the 'original' unhammered paint, as per my initial post on this subject, And if your son travels from Alnwick to york via car, Tor paints in Birtley is just off the A1M, right behind the Washington/Birtley Services. If you need any further info just message me.

Cheers. Jim.

Magic! Ta! Between yourself and Mark, I should be able to repaint the ould beastie with better gear in the not too distant future. I don't see the present job lasting more than a couple more years anyway.

If anybody is refurbishing an AGS, just watch out for re-aligning the arbour/arbor once you've put in new bearings. there is a spacer that needs to be bolted from outside the housing. Awkward, but do-able with care and patience.
