Instead of starting two threads with my current woes I though I'd chuck em in the same one :)

Bought an old startrite mercury (mark 1) I've found there can be quite a bit of wobble on the drill bits :( I've found that if I run the chuck open and closed it significantly reduces, the chuck is stiff ! I'm assuming it just needs a good clean so I want to get it off before to clean before I buy a new one.

There are two rings above the chuck, the bottom one has come undone no problem but I cant work out how to get the chuck off, any suggestions ? or does someone know how to do it ?

Next

I've got an old Parkinsons Perfect vice that's gone quite rusty especially the two main mains (not sure of name), not sure if I should try taking it apart to clean up the rust of not ? Any ideas how they come apart ? I can't work it out :( or should I leave it together and do something else with it ?

All help gratefully received as always :)

Hi Bigbud,
I have just restored a Record 52 1/2,it looked just as sad as your vice.I picked it up from the local tip some time ago,and like you I did not know where to start so it lay in a corner until Sunday.I started with a wire brush then WD-40 and a pack of sanding pads from the £1 shop, and then a rub down with wet&dry I then sprayed it with silicon spray, renewed the wooden jaws.I now have a perfectly good working vice all for the price of some time and elbow work.

I seem to remember they come apart if you remove the pin on the end.

Cheers fella, It was that easy. Just needed a tap with a hammer :D

Now trying to decide after a quick clean weather to go back to metal and repaint or not, think i'm going to leave it rustic thou. Might just clean up all the moving parts with sandpaper then lube and chuck back together :)

I had quite a job stopping mine from jumping out of grip when trying to hold anything firmly, something to do with the tension on the spring keeping the half but closed. It still isn't quite right. I sometimes wedge a block of wood underneath to stop the half but from opening up.

We the Startite chuck is held on by a Jacobs taper, the quail has the make section and the check has the female section. I think the two rings were designed to enable you to use them to push off the chuck.....never managed to do it myself. You need to buy a pair of folding wedges to push the chuck off. On the side if the chuck it will detail the size of the taper OE JC2 or JC3.

Folding wedges cost less than £10 I believe but they stop you damaging the taper.

Good luck
