Hello,

I have the Veritas Skew Block Plane since couple of years now, and have been using it a lot for plenty of small tasks, where it performs faultlessly when working on an edge (or tenon, etc)

However, I have an issue when using it with its full sole in contact with the piece im working on. Because of the opening on the side, the blade is always be digging on the wood, leaving a dreadful plane track. I've tried adjusting the blade position with the set screws, but I still end up with the same result.

This is particularly annoying when trimming for example a through tenon or dovetails, where a #4 or #5 doesnt fit.

Does anyone managed to get rid of those tracks ? or is this plane just not a "regular" block plane and shouldnt be used with its sole fully in contact with the wood ?

Thanks for any advise/input :)

I think you just have to accept that this plane is more of a specialist and less suited to general-purpose duties than a standard block plane.

Assuming the iron's edge angle hasn't been slowly altered during honing cycles you should be able to minimise tracks with a very precise setting and a super light cut, but I think it will prove impossible to prevent them entirely. Any plane that's intended for working in the middle of a board either has its iron's corners relieved or the edge cambered so they don't contact the wood.

Thanks Ed.

But then, why do they market them as being usable as a "normal" block plane ?

Might need to invest in a more normal one. Maybe a good reason to get a shinny 102...
