New to woodworking....Only produced a handful of painted ply objects...

So Veneered Ply....seems to be close to, if not impossible to source in Norfolk. A few stock MDF, but not plywood

With that in mind, anyone knows if any stockists in the east, or has anyone ordered online - and if so how did that go!

And has anyone veneered ply themselves?

Ridgeons (Huws Gray) will get it in for you. So will Nordic Timber (Witham). Andersons (Witham) used to be the major sheet materials specialist in East Anglia, but I'm not sure they exist any more.

Will Huws Gray look after it for you or deliver it with a tonne bag of sand & gravel on top? Genuine question, maybe the branch I use are just a bit rough.

I'd never put a piece of veneered sheet material on a delivery lorry. That's something I'd always collect myself. My local branch (Sudbury) would look after it, though, if I did want it delivered, because I've known them for decades and I'd simply ask them to be careful.

Every time I've had sheet goods delivered from Ridgeons (Cambridge) they've been wrapped up in two layers of plastic, and in a stack on the lorry of other sheet goods. That's been whether it's OSB or birch ply, so on that experience I wouldn't mind having them deliver veneered ply if I needed it. Obviously that's dependent on your local branch, though, so YMMV. Also, while I've not used any of the original Huws Gray branches, I get the impression that the old Ridgeons still operates as it used to, and that it's a bit different from the other Huws Gray operations - if nothing else, their range of stock is different, and it wouldn't surprise me if there's a cultural difference to go with it.

Maybe I have been lucky. In the last couple of years I have used about 90 large sheets of ply, about 40% of it high grade BB, the rest suitable for wall panelling and constructional work (roofing etc), plus some MDF etc and almost all has been delivered (from reputable suppliers). I have only had one damaged BB sheet, which they replaced with no fuss, leaving me with the mostly usable damaged one. I have rejected about 6 boards (not BB) for poor veneer layering and 2 boards for excessive patching (different suppliers) - again replaced with no fuss. Thicknesses vary from 9mm (which is about as thin as I go, even for drawer bottoms) to 24mm.

Like you, I have some long standing supplier relationships, and do not necessarily go for the absolute cheapest.
