Veneered Boards of MDF or PLY?

Hi :)

Im going to be making quite a big glass doored display cabinet in Oak soon for my living room, because of the size of the project I feel that veneered MDF or Ply would be better than trying to glue up strips of hardwood for the sides, top, bottom etc.. & would be a lot more stable.

However im having a devil of a job trying to find anyone that sells these boards, im in Essex  & have a www.panelsupplies.co.uk catalogue, but the prices seem quite high (£40 per 2440x1220x19mm MDF board) & I get the impression this isnt the place that the general hobby woodworker should be buying from, it all seems rather big, requiring an account to be setup etc..

Does anyone know of any places (websites etc..) that sells veneered boards?

Thanks!
Nick

Nick.

I know Jewson the builders have a section called timber world the do all the mdf's and plys, not sure if there is one by you or not. I think a search for timber world may show where they are in the country.
Hope this helps

All the best

Neil

Edens and Silvermans are the two big specialist suppliers of panel products, I think. Not usre what their minimum order quantities are, and I don't think you'll find that the £40 is a bad price for a full size sheet of veneered ply. If it's birch ply that's £30 before you start, and even if it's just WBP, that's still £25 odd without the two skins of face veneer.

Travis Perkins do them. No minimum order.
I think most of the trade timber yards stock these sheets actually.

You could try Ridgeons - they've got branches in North Essex and deliver for free...

18mm veneered MDF £37.75 for an 8x4 sheet.

I've got a cash account with them which helps reduce the prices a bit.

I would not advise using SL Hardwoods for boards, they do not keep them in stock, just buy them in and sell them on, I used them a couple of times several years ago and got very poor boards.

I now use Richard Russells who can usually deliver next day throughout the southeast. Price is about £40 for 19mm sheet. Use ply for the backs as it only has one veneered face so is a bit cheaper. As the keep the boards you will get consecutive ones from a pallet which is better for matching the grain, also buy the iron on real wood edging at the same time.

Have a look in this album for some cabinets I made from oak MDF.

Jason

Many thanks for the Richard Russell Link, ive just ordered a load of 19" Maple and beech to rebuild the wadrobes in the kids bedrooms, really helpful company on the phone. Great pics on your website btw as well

JasonB, that cabinet in Oak is exactly the veneered board im looking for. ( Well the top is ).
I need 2 pieces one 158cm long 50 cm deep and about 26mm thick, the other 99cmx69cmx26mm.

Ive been scouring every DIY shop i can and have some to the conclusion im not going to find what i need in any of them. Seeing your link on here to richardrussell and your photos has given me some hope i can get what i need.

How do you get that edging on the top thick section of your cabinets ? Can they supply that too ? I need to edge 3 of the sides.

If you got that MDF from RR can you let me know which one it was as it is EXACTLY the colouring and pattern im looking for, or alternatively how you achieved that thickness and finish on the edges.

Also do you know if RR will deliver just 3 or 4 sheets to Kent ? Dont really need a palet load

Oh and forgive my ignorance what does "2 Sides - A/B Grade" mean as listed against their panels ? Other than i assume its veneered both sides.....

Cheers

Andy

Not sure which bit you mean by "top"

The vertical and horizontal open shelves are 26mm thick but the top horizontal is 52mm made up by glueing a second 75mm wide strip of MDF onto a full width sheet.

The 19 & 26mm boards are edges with 22 & 30mm real wood iron on edging and the built-up 52mm edge is done in flexi-veneer All from richard R's

A sides A/B grade means both sides have good quality veneer A being the best grain with no defects. The boards are crown cut oak, ref NCC026A for the 26mm

They will deliver 4 sheets OK but may possibly make a small delivery charge but thats unlikely, they will help you unload as 26mm MDF is a bit much on your own.

Jason thanks for the reply,

My mistake I did actually mean the 52mm top of the cabinet, so if i understand you correctly its not two full 26mm boards glued together , just a strip glued round all 4 sides then edged with flexi-veneer ?

Please excuse my noobness here, but what form and size does this flexi veneer come in ? Is it on a roll or a large sheet ? Is it asy for a relative beginner to affix ?

I need to make a decison whether to settle for 26mm board and regular edging or try something a bit more adventurous to get it thicker.

Dont know if this is the best place to ask but one of the tops i need to construct is an odd shape so i will not be able to use any of the 'factory' edges, what is the best way to cut these panels to prevent any chipping etc so i can then applay the edging strip ?

And is this the edging you used on the 26mm panels > EOAK26Z ??

Thanks again for taking the trouble.

Andy

Thats right andy its just a strip glued on, to the front and side only in fact. I rough cut the panel approx 10mm oversize then glue on the extra strip. once the glue has set it is then cut to finished size on the table saw to give a nice smooth edge, a circular saw and straight edge will do if you don't have a table saw.

When you say an "odd" shape do you mean cut at an angle or a wavy edge :?: For a straight cut then one of the above will be OK, for a wavy edge I would make a template from say 6mm MDF which is easy to shape. Then use the template to guide a flush trimming dit in the router making sure to cut with the grain. Then glue on the thikening strip and use the previously cut sheet to guide the router assuming you will have a 25mm wide flush cutter. If you had a 50mm cutter you could do it all in one. It is always best to recut the edges, the out of the factory edge is usually cut with a very coarse blade and there may be a bit of damage and the scoring blades are not always set spot on.

The flexi veneer comes in a sheet 1220x2440 with a paper backing (see flexible products), it can be stuck with titebond, resin W or contact cement, normal PVA does not always work. Just clamp a piece of wood over it to hold it flat while the glue driesIt is also possible to buy 50mm wide iron on edging, try South London Hardwoods, they had some the other day.

Yes thats the right ref for the edging.
