I am about to do my 2nd project, a picture frame for my daughter's Xmas present. I have got some lovely veneer and want to sandwich a veneered strip between 2 thinner strips to finish the edges.

The veneer bit will only be about 1cm wide. Do I veneer a wide strip on its backing wood first or cut the strip to length then veneer? Worried it will splinter when I rip it down to width.

Thanks

Mike

You could do either, but if it was me I’d build it up as a complete banding then glue that to the frame. If you have the grain down the length maybe rout the slot for the veneer then plane it to fit the groove then sand flush.

Another option if the thin strips are inlay and not lipping, you could rout in the veneer slot (say 12mm wide) then cut the inlay either side into the substrate and the veneer, that’s the tradition approach for that build-up.
