Couldn't you just rout both top and breadboard end for a floating tenon, but then glue the tenon into the top?

I missed this earlier, but precisely this technique was demonstrated in the above video and I think it’s what I’m going to go with. It will maximise the amount of wood left as I won’t need to cut in to the top to form tenons.
