I eventually bought an expensive Vacuum bag set up for laminating and veneering. I couldn't understand why the bags / pumps didn't have a non-return valve and had to be left on continuously…….. so I fitted a non return valve and if you make sure there are no leaks you can switch the pump off and it holds the pressure. So after some Googling I found this site.

These seem to be the same units as you use for wine bottles, they are Vacu Vin and Amazon do them.
Bagging material is available here, and there is a good post on here on making your own system with lots of links.

I hope this maybe helpful to someone who wants to do occasional vacuum pressing or veneering with very little outlay.
