A while ago i asked about a chisel for making v shaped grooves in wood and i got lots of relpies about scratch posts and the likes. Well i found a chisel in the end that is shaped like a V which is ideal for my needs, but it was in a set of 6 chisels for a fiver, small craft woodcarving chisels. As you can imagine at this price they are'nt the greatest of quality and i was wondering about paying out for a better one. Any suggestions about where i could get this shaped chisel from as our local hardware shop don't seem to do anything other than flat chisels. Also are they hard to get resharpened?

Thanks,

Calv.

Hi Calv

Anywhere that sells woodcarving tools should have "V Tools". They come in various shapes and sizes and if you want small ones that fit in the palm of the hand look for block-cutting tools.

Have a look at this:

Axminster and loads of other places do them too. Depends on the make/quality etc you want.

Chris Pye's books are an excellent reference for sharpening:

...and,yes, V tools are a bit fiddly to sharpen. It's very easy to lose the shape of the edge. Bit of practice should see you OK though! :)
