When I attached the hinges (eurostyle - to get the clean uncluttered strong look at the front), I used treaded inserts (4mm) and found this very successful
I used the inserts for the following reason:
after fixing them I had to take them off to complete the finishing,
you have to loosen them to a adjust the hinges so the door is hanging perfect in the opening, this fasting and loosening is easier when using bolts rather then screws
So I drilled to pilot holes and then screwed-in the inserts and fixed the hinges with steel socket cap screws (gives a nice industrial look)
